I had a reminder this past week of just how much I admire the work — the styling and photo skills — of Aubergine Sugarplum, possibly the most competent renderer of the belle laide (‘ugly pretty’) look in SL.* I’ve tried to sorta-kinda emulate her before, but it’s time consuming to even approximate the post-production work, alone. She’s said something along these lines on her blog, explaining why she doesn’t post that often. I have no clue about her “real” life, but I imagine someone who works in the fashion and/or photo arts professionally, and therefore “practices” every day, and that explains why she has gotten so good at her occasional SL shots and I’m still lame-o. I’ve only ‘advanced’ far enough to be able to render some light flares and slap on some texture overlays that I don’t even make myself (I kind of have a hunch that Aubergine probably makes her own…).
Anyway, as I mentioned in my previous post about AS’s work, Etoile doesn’t full on embrace the laide aspects of belle laide, but that doesn’t keep me from wanting to capture a sort of Aubergine Sugarplum moment now and then.
*Alas, she hasn’t updated her blog since the summer, but she does have more recent things up on her flickr.
Hair: Point b (Analog Dog) ~ Madison2 in chili ~ holiday gift (‘k, just going to say, I’m not nutso for this particular hair, although I do like other AD hairs. I way prefer the hand drawn look for just about any texture in SL. There’s something about the photosourced textures that just feels off to me. They don’t blend well with otherwise drawn texturing, for one thing. But, I had this hair on and didn’t think about it much until I was already set up for the photo shoot, so make it work, babes…).
I’m having twitchy luck with the mesh goods. Sometimes I put one on, and everything about me but my objects disappears. I turn into a ghost dress with hair and eyeballs. So not attractive. But I didn’t have that problem with this sweet little early ’60’s number from Vinyl Cafe, their latest group gift.
The Back Story. Carrot, neon or otherwise, doesn’t trigger quite the screed-writing mood I was in last week with pink. For those who dig the social commentary, that sucks. For those who prefer looking at the pictures without having to wade through lengthy critiques on gender constructions, or whatever, this is their lucky day!
