Periwinkle, of course.

Location: embryo [un jour]

The Back Story.

When Luna Jubilee gave us the heads up about this week’s challenge last week, she forgot to change the name of the color; there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth at the thought of another round of eggplant, and what an anemic looking eggplant it was. But I knew she meant periwinkle. Of course she did. A few days later she fixed the boo-boo, and it is… wait for it… periwinkle!

I was well under way with this one by that time. I had this “Marilyn” dress from an Icing lucky board this past winter sitting in my closet doing nothing but collecting the odor of mothballs. Out it came into the fresh air of spring. I just couldn’t decide upon the accessories, so I give you two versions, both quite romantic, but varying in their exuberance for the season. I predict there will be a lot of versions of this piece coming at us this week. That lucky board was a major clusterf^@k, to say nothing of fug fest (I’m a big fan of the fugly in SL, so don’t get me wrong here).

Asparagus with a nice vinegrette.

52 Weeks – Asparagus with a premonition of next week.

The Back Story.

This time of year in Germany, Spargel is all the rage. That’s white asparagus, or really kind of a creamy colored asparagus. It’s cultivated in deep mounds, so it never gets sunlight, hence the lack of chlorophyll that would make it green. It’s delicious and delicate, without the slight bitterness of your more run-of-the-mill asparagus grown without shielding it like a nun in cloister.

I don’t know why I’m bringing this up, except to argue that I could have dressed in white this week, and called it asparagus. If you’re from the southern United States, you know that the color “asparagus” is the same as any cooked vegetable green – kind of olive-colored. Southerners traditionally cook their green vegetables to frickin’ death.

Whatev… I like my asparagus when it comes with a tinge of purple around the tip, because I like what aubergine and green do for each other.

Banana muffin.

The Back Story.

I have to say, I enjoyed this color (52 Weeks of Color challenge). There was no particular outside inspiration here, but the skirt brought to mind ripe banana peels with the brown spots. Know what I’m sayin’? I’m feeling banana-y.

Sheep and rain and such.

The Back Story.

My white went through several permutations this week (52 Weeks of Color). I came up with some quite suitable looks, but was not feeling inspired by any of them. One little number I pulled out of the back depths of my closet was promising, but it was tres circa 1959, and I did vintage from that late 1950s/early 1960s last week (Never on Sunday). I want to keep things mixed up as much as possible. All Mad Men all the time makes the whole thing a little flat. That said, I’ll follow this post up with that other look, just because.

As frequently happens, it’s the location that ends up rocking my aesthetic boat more than, or at least as much, as the togs. I’ve taken some shots at Empress & Hierophant before, but not using the interiors there.

The general look is inspired by a shot of Evan Rachel Wood in the March Vogue (U.S.). I don’t know Evan Rachel Wood from a hole in the ground, but I dug the styling here. My interpretation has that vintage thing going on, too, with an obvious reference to the post-War period giving a nod back to the 1930s with a dash of the 1910s. Edwardian meets Depression meets New Look. Nice.

Never on Sunday.

Homer: It’s extraordinary! Where do you learn all those languages?
Illya: In bed.

The Back Story.

My first thought with the Sky Blue Challenge was to pester a friend of mine to let me style  and shoot her. I knew she had something pretty good in her wardrobe, and was convinced that I had nothing in mine.

So, that’s what I did. Thanks to Miss Sudie (given her little moment in the sun below) I had a picture I was reasonably happy with within 24 hours of seeing next week’s assignment. But, I was flipping through the March issue of Vogue a few nights later; Lady Gaga was on the cover, but she ain’t got nuthin’ on Amber Valetta in her tres Mad Men inspired shoot, all sleek early 1960s, a sun-kissed mane of blond hair pulled back off her strong, dark brows. Love, love, love.

I started thinking about the pieces I have that would let me give a nod to that look in shades of blue. Navy pencil skirt – check. Little sky blue tank blouse – check. And right about that point, my mind’s eye went straight back to 1960 and Melina Mercouri in Never on Sunday as the fun-loving prostitute hanging out dockside at the Port of Athens in Pireus, Greece. I’ve always been drawn to that look, and my re-visioning of Amber took me right there.

Looking for the iconic outfit from that film – the one on the movie poster – I ran across a tremendous little blog called Pintuckstyle all about recreating vintage looks. “Awww-Sum,” exclaims Etoile in a singsongy voice. That site has a post titled – tah dah!How to dress like Ilya, Mercouri’s character in the film. Of course, I already know how to do that, but it was very cool seeing my smoldering little passion for that look, and particularly that pencil skirt/strappy blouse ensemble in the colors of the Greek flag, validated and shared.

Throwing on some simple earrings and my sweet-tooth Antidepressant shoes from Grim Bros, I hopped over to Athens, taking a few shots in the Plaka. That was all well and good, but we need a grungy, urban Mediterranean seaport sim, people. I did, however, find a tramp steamer for recreating something of the iconic Mercouri shot on another sim.
