The Back Story.

My schedule this spring means a whole lot less hanging out in SL playing dolly dress up, but when it comes to a get up like this, I find some time. Yes I do.

Too beauteous for comfort.

The Back Story.

The longer I worked on this (particularly the head shot) the more the skin bugged me. Now, don’t get me wrong; it’s a nice skin and I thought the makeup effect on the eyes was cool. And it was a hunt item, and therefore free, and let us not complain about that. It’s just that it’s too perfect, too pretty. Etoile is looking far too glammy here. She’s out of her comfort zone. She feels more real with a somewhat less polished face.

Or maybe it’s just all those flowers lending themselves to the idea of beauty. Or the hair… is it the hair?

Imitation of [s]life

The Back Story.

I had a reminder this past week of just how much I admire the work — the styling and photo skills — of Aubergine Sugarplum, possibly the most competent renderer of the belle laide (‘ugly pretty’) look in SL.* I’ve tried to sorta-kinda emulate her before, but it’s time consuming to even approximate the post-production work, alone. She’s said something along these lines on her blog, explaining why she doesn’t post that often. I have no clue about her “real” life, but I imagine someone who works in the fashion and/or photo arts professionally, and therefore “practices” every day, and that explains why she has gotten so good at her occasional SL shots and I’m still lame-o. I’ve only ‘advanced’ far enough to be able to render some light flares and slap on some texture overlays that I don’t even make myself (I kind of have a hunch that Aubergine probably makes her own…).

Anyway, as I mentioned in my previous post about AS’s work, Etoile doesn’t full on embrace the laide aspects of belle laide, but that doesn’t keep me from wanting to capture a sort of Aubergine Sugarplum moment now and then.

*Alas, she hasn’t updated her blog since the summer, but she does have more recent things up on her flickr.

  • Hair: Point b (Analog Dog) ~ Madison2 in chili ~ holiday gift (‘k, just going to say, I’m not nutso for this particular hair, although I do like other AD hairs. I way prefer the hand drawn look for just about any texture in SL. There’s something about the photosourced textures that just feels off to me. They don’t blend well with otherwise drawn texturing, for one thing. But, I had this hair on and didn’t think about it much until I was already set up for the photo shoot, so make it work, babes…).

Getting away from the noise in Kowloon.

The Back Story.

I decided to get away from it all in a far off land (far off to me, anyway). The shape drama on SL is getting craaaazy, peoples (see also Alicia Chenaux’s pithy “Stop it” piece). Am I sensing a ground swell of consumer revolt against the grump-face pony-rider shape? A final smack down before the demise of a fad?

Whatever it might be, remember folks, that these avatars we play around with are not our corporeal bodies. They aren’t even as materially substantive as a doll that you can hold in your hands, for that matter.

I just recalled an incident from when I was five years old. A neighbor boy made fun of the way one of my dollies looked, and I whacked him upside the head with a pointy metal thing. He had to get stitches. I got grounded. Over a damn doll.

Yeah. Dumb. But I was five and had skin about as thick as nanofilm.

The Back Story.

This is not a usual sort of look for me. I picked up this Loli-esque ensemble at Katat0nik some ages ago, when I was momentarily flirting with the aesthetic. Ages ago means back in something like October 2010. Eons, man… dinosaur times, B.B. (Before Blog era, or at least my blog era). Back then and for the preceding eons, I just wandered around the grid trying to find  myself. I even toyed with the persona of a red-headed flapper and burlesque dancer. That was amusing for a while, and I was a better than average emoter, managing to avoid standard Etoile Fisseux runs her hands down her sensuous, sweaty body purple prose, but it just wasn’t me. I dig the Lost Generation nostalgia of that scene, but I’m better as the brooding writer skulking off to be alone in a corner at a cocktail party. I just happen to like playing with clothes more than is usual for that stock character.

My flirtation with the Loli/Goth Loli thing could never have been more than that. That scene is way too draconian in its demands for sartorial purity. The girls are cutthroat, despite the over-the-top sweetness of the look. If presented with this little dress now, I would probably give it a miss. But there it was in my closet shouting, “I’m ruby, bay-bee!” Yes, dear. You are that.

There is one new bit going on here, though; I have to give a shout out to Saffron Foxclaw for reminding me that Worldwide Industries had these gartered socks (more stockings in this case, but whatev) among their goods. Due to some recent commentary on a flickr group to which we both belong, it is now widely known that gartered socks make me squeal. They are my trend vice. I will probably be pulling them out well past the point of trend, when people start taking in-world snap shots of me to post on SL fugly sites with comments like, “That is sooo 2010.”

Worldwide Industries…  love the vague, smokestack imagery of a multinational global mega corporation for a little SL dolly-dress-up clothes shop. Here I am, facing off the robot warriors of the globalized post-apocalypse, brought to you by strong-jawed Capitalism.
