I feel spring coming on, despite the late winter awfulness out there. And my mood from yesterday — wanting to counter the in-your-face, ramped up, cartoon sex bombardment the feeds have been heavily besieged with lately — continues. The promise of spring and all the wacky pudendum-bearing hawty pony-riders trotting around lately push me right into the land of too precious. I think I’ll be hiding out here a while.
Hair: D!va ~ D!va2 in onyx w/ flowers ~ group gift
I popped in world last night thinking about doing nothing in particular except maybe fixing a bad job I had done on a previous post. But then I heard this chatter. Something about some kind of insane blow out at the Sea Hole? Stuff for the cheaps? A thousand little SL voices all chiming in at once about miracles and surprises and one great splendiferous gas at one great splendiferous gas of a store?
Okay. Sign me up. So off I went to see what all the noise and hubbub was about. Yes, there is one item in each of the collections that’s being offered for 50L, which ain’t bad for some cleverly designed stuff. My one disappointment was in the color choices for the sale items. I was so ready to plunk down Ls for versions in yellows and reds and oranges, but everything offered at that price was more in the black, grey and lilac family. That’s all well and good, mind you, but when you’re hankering for a rich orange, the traditional half-mourning color of lilac just doesn’t quite cut it.
Know what I’m sayin’?
Still, a good dress is a good dress. And I am soooo pleased to be bringing to the feeds this much needed respite from the maddening inundation of virtual “whore” aesthetics….
I had a reminder this past week of just how much I admire the work — the styling and photo skills — of Aubergine Sugarplum, possibly the most competent renderer of the belle laide (‘ugly pretty’) look in SL.* I’ve tried to sorta-kinda emulate her before, but it’s time consuming to even approximate the post-production work, alone. She’s said something along these lines on her blog, explaining why she doesn’t post that often. I have no clue about her “real” life, but I imagine someone who works in the fashion and/or photo arts professionally, and therefore “practices” every day, and that explains why she has gotten so good at her occasional SL shots and I’m still lame-o. I’ve only ‘advanced’ far enough to be able to render some light flares and slap on some texture overlays that I don’t even make myself (I kind of have a hunch that Aubergine probably makes her own…).
Anyway, as I mentioned in my previous post about AS’s work, Etoile doesn’t full on embrace the laide aspects of belle laide, but that doesn’t keep me from wanting to capture a sort of Aubergine Sugarplum moment now and then.
*Alas, she hasn’t updated her blog since the summer, but she does have more recent things up on her flickr.
Hair: Point b (Analog Dog) ~ Madison2 in chili ~ holiday gift (‘k, just going to say, I’m not nutso for this particular hair, although I do like other AD hairs. I way prefer the hand drawn look for just about any texture in SL. There’s something about the photosourced textures that just feels off to me. They don’t blend well with otherwise drawn texturing, for one thing. But, I had this hair on and didn’t think about it much until I was already set up for the photo shoot, so make it work, babes…).
