The Back Story.

I had posted this outfit – with slight variations – back in January, but I have not been happy with those pictures. They were sloppily done. I didn’t even fit the prims on my boots right.

Bad Etoile.

This is my redemption. And yes, apparently everyone does go to ChouChou.

Imitation of [s]life

The Back Story.

I had a reminder this past week of just how much I admire the work — the styling and photo skills — of Aubergine Sugarplum, possibly the most competent renderer of the belle laide (‘ugly pretty’) look in SL.* I’ve tried to sorta-kinda emulate her before, but it’s time consuming to even approximate the post-production work, alone. She’s said something along these lines on her blog, explaining why she doesn’t post that often. I have no clue about her “real” life, but I imagine someone who works in the fashion and/or photo arts professionally, and therefore “practices” every day, and that explains why she has gotten so good at her occasional SL shots and I’m still lame-o. I’ve only ‘advanced’ far enough to be able to render some light flares and slap on some texture overlays that I don’t even make myself (I kind of have a hunch that Aubergine probably makes her own…).

Anyway, as I mentioned in my previous post about AS’s work, Etoile doesn’t full on embrace the laide aspects of belle laide, but that doesn’t keep me from wanting to capture a sort of Aubergine Sugarplum moment now and then.

*Alas, she hasn’t updated her blog since the summer, but she does have more recent things up on her flickr.

  • Hair: Point b (Analog Dog) ~ Madison2 in chili ~ holiday gift (‘k, just going to say, I’m not nutso for this particular hair, although I do like other AD hairs. I way prefer the hand drawn look for just about any texture in SL. There’s something about the photosourced textures that just feels off to me. They don’t blend well with otherwise drawn texturing, for one thing. But, I had this hair on and didn’t think about it much until I was already set up for the photo shoot, so make it work, babes…).

The Back Story.

I used to hang out at this joint all the time. Good music, and all, with attention to the 1920s through 1950s. Plus it’s the only place I know of where one could find a ska show. Yes, I know, ska is not exactly ‘old standards’, but still, it was fun.

That being said, it was a little thick with women. Etoile is not in the least bit interested in getting involved in virtual romantic imbroglios, but when she gets all dressed up to cut the rug old school style, it’s nice when she can do it with an old school partner.

Getting away from the noise in Kowloon.

The Back Story.

I decided to get away from it all in a far off land (far off to me, anyway). The shape drama on SL is getting craaaazy, peoples (see also Alicia Chenaux’s pithy “Stop it” piece). Am I sensing a ground swell of consumer revolt against the grump-face pony-rider shape? A final smack down before the demise of a fad?

Whatever it might be, remember folks, that these avatars we play around with are not our corporeal bodies. They aren’t even as materially substantive as a doll that you can hold in your hands, for that matter.

I just recalled an incident from when I was five years old. A neighbor boy made fun of the way one of my dollies looked, and I whacked him upside the head with a pointy metal thing. He had to get stitches. I got grounded. Over a damn doll.

Yeah. Dumb. But I was five and had skin about as thick as nanofilm.

The Back Story.

A while back, blogger Mackenzie Irling (Rummagings) posted a challenge to the SL fashion play blog-o-sphere, called Bloggers We Love. The idea was to get bloggers to ask a favorite blogger to blog with them for a week in one great blogging orgy love fest. I had barely started with this whole thing at that time,  nobody knew me from Adam, and I barely knew a ‘smudge’ from a ‘Gaussian blur’ in Photoshop. Like, I was going to ask some fashion play hot shot to blog with me… not, says Wayne.

I don’t think I’d have the gumption to do it now, either, but Aubergine Surgarplum is in the top cluster of my watch list with her site, Au revoir aubergines. Her styling is wacky and clever. She’s adept at taking bits and pieces of various garments, accessories, props and whatever else she finds, and working them into coherent ensembles. Every time I look at a new post, I sit here chewing on my pinky nail and thinking, “How the heck did she come up with that idea…?”

And then there’s her composition and editing skills. They are absolutely killer. She didn’t hatch from the egg that way, of course. Going back to her earliest entries, one can see the evolution of her technique in her SL oeuvre (I do love making all this sound like a grand, intellectual exercise, and I think one can make the argument that it is, at the risk of sounding like a bubble-headed prat to one segment of humanity and a pretentious one to the rest).

Anyway, back to me, I decided to play around with some shots using mostly things picked up at the latest Seasons Hunt clusterf&%k (it was crazy in there, folks, but the group chat was entertaining), and with Aubergine as inspiration, right down to shooting at a location she used. I have a long way to go, and there are certain elements of her style that I’ll probably not pick up and embrace as my own. I appreciate the Mooqla doll, ‘ugly chic’ anti-aesthetic as a form of style politics; a rejection of dull ‘prettiness’, and a ridiculing of bodily ‘perfection’ through the distortions of the pelvic floor, the bowed legs, the pigeon-toed large feet. I like getting some flaws into my avatar — no sculpted glamazon look for me, thank you very much — but I’m too aesthetically wedded to (dependent upon?) plain old ‘prettiness’ to take my play there. But kudos to Aubergine for doing the look with such creativeness and technical skill.  There’s a lot of that horse-shoe pelvis, pouty girl stuff on the grid these days, but I wouldn’t give most of it much praise.

So, yeah. Here’s me trying my hand at more or less the look and feel of one of my favorite fashion play bloggers. My computer just can’t handle the viewers that do shadows well, alas, so I’m limited in the technology, in addition to the raw skill set.

The Back Story

I’m trying to figure out the right look for this site. Prolly the “sketchy” one.

Whatev. The polka dot number is making the rounds, so nothing new here (except in my fabulous stylin’). Still, it’s a cute number, and when worn with pants or legging and a nice little jacket, completely veers away from any unnecessary skank.

The Goods

  • Hair – D!va – Yuria in Garnet – 0L (lucky board)
  • Skin: .::Mother Goose’s::. – Gerda4 – 0L (lucky board)
  • Eye Makeup: Kyoot – Cateye 1 in Fever 1 – 100L

  • Necklace: (Elate!) – Silver Pocket Watch – 0L (hunt item, now for sale)
  • Leggings: {MV} – Galaxy Leggings – 50L (everything is 50L – designer is retiring, it seems)
  • Boots: Fools Fate – Leather Zipper in cream – 25L (Gacha machine; they’re like 600 or 700L regularly, so if you don’t mind the color crap shoot, just seeing what you get, go for a few pulls on the gacha lever)
  • First two locations: LISP Bazaar selling some very aesthetically interesting and appealing furnishings – that red love seat in the seafoam room is delicious. If I were into all this enough to set up housekeeping, Lisp would be on my list.
  • Second two locations: Sword Fish. I’ll use the photobooths, of course but I love the fun, variety and challenge of finding some charming, atmospheric spot. The body is just a body… put it in a setting you are almost have yourself a story.
  • Poses: Group gift from tram used in the last two pictures.

Out of the shadows.

Still got a ways to go, but it's a start.

Oh… so that’s how they do it… the shadows, that is. I downloaded Kirstens Viewer, and thar those shadows (and depth of field) be. I don’t have a graphics card spankin’ spiffy enough for the process to be anything less than painfully cumbersome, so I don’t know that I’ll be using it all that much yet, but it’s cool to have the option.

I have Strawberry Singh’s tutorial to thank for this new way to waste massive amounts of time. She does a great job walking through the steps. Though not for everyone, it’s perfect for those of us who are not technical wizards, but who know just about enough to make us dangerous.

Yes, people really did used to wear stuff like this.

And check out these crazy shoes. They’re from an in world maker/seller of historical reproduction chopines, appropriately enough called Chopine’s. The prim feet and ankles are a little hard to work with (for someone of marginal skill, such as moi), but they’re funkilicious for pictures when I have time to Photoshop my sizing & texturing clumsiness.
